Nour Assalia
Nour Assalia was born in Hama, Syria and studied Fine Art and Sculpture at Damascus University. She gained both an MA and a PhD from The University of Paris 8, and now lives and works in France.
In her art practice she researches themes of fragility, sensitivity and remembrance. She depicts hands, faces, eyes bound, encased and emerging from cloth, rope, or resin. A sense of stillness and calmness is juxtaposed with the violence of the fragmented body.
Assalia’s work has been shown at the Latakia International Sculpture Biennale, the Ihden Plastic Arts Biennale in Lebanon and in shows in Rome, Barcelona and Paris. Assalia was the recipient of the 2019 Atassi Foundation Art Writing award and the First Sculpture Prize in the’“Meeting of Young Artists’ competition organized by Gallery Quazah in Damascus.
